What is a text message?

A Text message is a short message that can be sent to and from a cellular phone. When someone says text, texting, MSG, or SMS, or if you see TXT in print, all of these are referring to text messages.

What Is SMS or MSG?

SMS is an acronym for Short Message Service. It is a worldwide standard for communicating textually between cellular phones. MSG is acronym of Message and it suits more because it is your message in the end.

Can everyone receive text messages/SMS?

Nearly every cellular mobile in use in the India(and the world) can receive SMS. Most wireless carriers include text messaging/SMS facility in their standard plans.

Is there a difference between email and text messaging?

While most phones can send and receive email, email is not the same as text messaging. There are many differences--for example a text message is sent to a phone number, while an email is sent to an email address.

What does it cost for a consumer to receive a text message or Marketing SMS?

Some carriers do not charge their customers to receive text messages, In India it's free to receive SMS. Others include a certain number in their standard plans (Mostly in USA)--these usually cost less than ten cents a message.

How long can a SMS or MSG be?

A standard message send via SMS is limited to 160 characters. Characters means letters, numbers, spaces, symbols and punctuation. Our system allows 160 characters for all types of routes in India.

What is a short code?

A Short Code is similar to the address (URL) of a website. It is a unique location to send messages to, that all cellular carriers are aware of. You combine a Short Code with a Keyword to form a call-to-action address. An example would be: 'Text KEYWORD to SHORTCODE to get this offer or get this ringtone.'

What is a Keyword?

A Keyword is a short word (which may include numbers) that customers send a text message to, in order to join your list. An example would be: 'Text KEYWORD to SHORTCODE to join our text messaging list.'

What does it mean to Opt-In?

To Opt-In is to join a list. This can be done by sending a text message containing your KEYWORD to our SHORTCODE, or by entering your phone number into a web-based form. This action signifies that a customer has asked you to send them a message.

What does it mean to Opt-Out?

A subscriber Opts Out when they quit your list. Users can do this quickly and simply by replying to any text message you send them with the word STOP.

Who regulates text messaging?

In India, TRAI plays role in regulating SMS messaging. But in The United States, they are The MMA, Wireles Carriers and the FCC.

I would like to collect mobile phone numbers from my own customers for marketing purposes where do I start?

The first thing you need to determine is whether you are going to market only your own goods and services to your customers, or whether you intend to market third party goods and services as well. It is important that you have decided this right from the start because the type of permission or consent that you will need to obtain from your customer depends on your marketing intentions: 1. If you only intend to market your own goods and services, you can obtain consent on an opt-out basis; but 2. If you intend to send your customers' mobile marketing messages about other companies' goods and services, you will need to ensure that you have obtained the positive or opt-in consent from your customers for this type of marketing.

What is the difference in Marketing routes, service routes and critical routes?

Marketing route is treated lowest priority routes so sometimes if traffic is high; it may take upto one hour to deliver all SMS. Service route is perfect if you are sending notifications or alerts to your users and these SMS are not time constrained that you want it to be delivered in seconds. This route sends all SMS maximum in few minutes if traffic is high. Fastest but used lowest route; Critical route, it is used maximum for share brokers or people who want to send SMS in seconds. This route is first priority route to entertain by our server. In normal cases, all routes send SMS in few seconds.

Can I use Critical routes for Marketing SMS?

No, you can not send Marketing Bulk SMS from through critical routes.

Can I shift to critical route from marketing route or vice versa?

Any user can shift from any routes to any routes extra credit for SMS will be added or deduct as per calculation.

How to change or define sender id?

Msg91 provide open sender id/dynamic sender id. You do not need to verify first or get approval. Type your sender id and send SMS. If you do not write anything in sender id then Msg91 will send SMS from it default sender id that you can set in setting.

How to create reseller branding/own branding on your own website?

Msg91 provides very easy and fast way to make your white label website. It will not take more than 5 minutes to create a branded dedicated control panel with your own branding. Go to manage subsite in your reseller control panel.

How many SMS can we send in one go?

You can send lacs of SMS in one go; it depends on the way you are choosing to send SMS. If you are sending from groups then no problem for limit but if you are sending from direct file then it limits to one lac. If you are copy and pasting number in number column then it limits you to 2000 numbers.

Which cellular carriers do you support?

Msg91 SMS is certified and supported by all of the major cellular carriers in the India and most of the countries. Visit our coverage page for a full carrier coverage list.

How do I access my Msg91 account / do I need any special software/hardware?

Since Msg91's SMS software is web-based, all you need to access our service is a computer with an internet connection and a web browser. There is no special software or hardware to purchase or install.

How long does it take for my contacts to receive the messages that I send?

Bulk SMS are sent instantly and arrive within 1 - 2 minutes of you sending them. If a customer's phone is turned off, or is in an area without coverage (such as inside an elevator), their carrier holds this SMS and delivers it as soon as the customer re-enters a coverage area.

Is there a limit to how many messages I can send using MSG91?

There is no limit to how many messages you can send using our text messaging service. However, best practices indicate that you should not send more than one SMS per day to your subscribers. More frequent SMS can result in high Opt-Out rates for your list. Some time, when you send more marketing SMS, users get irritated and it damages your brand.
