MSG91 Blog: Set Max Price for WhatsApp Business API

#

Reduce your WhatsApp marketing cost, the way advertisers do

Anyone who has run ads knows the rule: you do not pay the same price for every audience. You decide what a click is worth to you, you place a bid, and you pay no more than that.

WhatsApp marketing has not worked that way. A message costs what the rate card says, whether it goes to a customer who reads and replies or to one who never opens it. Why should both audiences cost the same?

At MSG91 you can bid in the same way. The feature is called Set Max Price, and it asks only that you decide, in advance, what you are willing to pay for a message.

Setting it up in MSG91

Think of it as a ceiling. You tell WhatsApp the most you are willing to pay for one marketing message, and you will not be charged more than that. The cap protects you; it does not oblige you to spend. In MSG91 it takes five steps.

  1. Open an approved marketing template in MSG91 and choose to edit it.

  2. Find the Template pricing section. Under Pricing type you will see two choices: Standard, which is Meta's default rate, and Set max price, which caps the cost per delivery. Choose Set max price.

  3. Under Maximum price per delivery, enter the most you will pay for one message. The screen shows it in INR, per message.

  4. If you write to customers in other countries, add a country-wise price.

  5. Click Save.

That is all. The screen carries its own reminder: this is a cap only, and Meta may charge less.

One price, or one for each country

By default, the price you set applies to the country in which your business account is based. For many businesses that is enough.

Others write to customers in several countries. A message costs a different amount in each, because Meta prices it by the country of the person who receives it. For them, the same screen has a section called Country-wise price. Choose a country from the list, enter a price for it, and click Add country price to add the next one.

A single number for the whole world is a blunt instrument. A number for each market lets the limit follow the customer.

A simple example

Take a garment shop in Indore with two lists. The first has 4,000 regular customers who read its offers and often reply. The second has 6,000 old contacts who seldom open anything. To keep the arithmetic simple, assume that a marketing message costs ₹1. This is a hypothetical figure, not Meta's actual rate, which differs by country and changes from time to time.

Without the feature, both lists cost the same. Ten thousand messages at ₹1 each come to ₹10,000, however the customers behave.

With Set Max Price, the shop keeps one template for each list, since the price is set on the template. It begins both at ₹1, the default rate in our example. Its bill can now never go above ₹10,000, and Meta may charge less.

After a month, the shop reads its results. The regular customers are replying, so their figure stays where it is. The old contacts are not, so the shop lowers their figure to ₹0.90, one small step.

List Messages Cap per message Highest possible bill
Regular customers 4,000 ₹1.00 ₹4,000
Old contacts, first month 6,000 ₹1.00 ₹6,000
Old contacts, a month later 6,000 ₹0.90 ₹5,400

If every message is delivered, the highest possible bill falls from ₹10,000 to ₹9,400, and the shop is now paying less for the audience that gives it less. If its results slip, it moves the figure back up. That is bidding, in the plain sense that advertisers use the word.

Why a technology partner matters

Here is the part that is easy to miss. Many businesses have connected the WhatsApp Business API to a CRM or some other tool, and they fear that a new feature will mean new development work.

It does not. If your integration already runs through a technology partner like MSG91, you change nothing in it. You do not touch the CRM. You do not rewrite a line of code. You open the template, edit it, and set your price. From then on, the bidding feature works for every message sent with that template.

That is the practical reason to work with a technology partner. When a new feature arrives, you get it by editing a template, not by rebuilding a system.

Our advice, and the way back

We at MSG91 recommend this feature, and we suggest a simple way to begin: set your maximum price to the rate Meta charges by default. In our experience, that alone brings the overall cost of your campaign down.

But we do not ask anyone to take it on faith. If, after trying it, you feel the price is not working out in your favour, you need not stay. Choose Standard on the same screen, and your messages return to Meta's usual rate, exactly as if you had never used the feature.

One thing holds with or without this feature: delivery is never guaranteed. Meta may withhold a marketing message, with the error "This message was not delivered to maintain a healthy ecosystem engagement," when a person has already received too many. As for the figure itself, lower it only by degrees, and only after you have watched your results.

#

What we have seen

We have watched how this plays out, and one pattern stands out. The numbers getting a much better monthly price on marketing messages are those with a good read rate and a good reply rate. People open what is sent, and people answer it.

Those same numbers also carry less WhatsApp traffic. They send fewer messages, and they send them to people who want to hear from them.

The customer who is spoken to with a little thought and a little respect speaks back. In our experience, the better price has followed the better conversation. We cannot promise that your result will be the same, for it depends on your own numbers.

#

Try it, and judge for yourself

Open an approved template, choose Set max price, and begin with the rate Meta already charges, for your home country and any other country you write to. Watch the numbers for a month. If they please you, carry on. If they do not, choose Standard again, and nothing has been lost.

Every rupee saved on a message is a rupee free for something else: a better product, a fairer wage, a kinder reply to a customer.
