URL PREVIEW ON WHATSAPP

The URL Preview Toggle is a new feature in MSG91’s WhatsApp Number settings that allows businesses to control whether outbound WhatsApp messages should include a URL preview (link thumbnail) when sending messages through MSG91.

This document explains what the URL Preview Toggle is, how it works, when to use it, and important considerations while enabling or disabling link previews.

1. What is the URL Preview Toggle?  

The URL Preview Toggle is a switch available inside the MSG91 Dashboard under:

WhatsApp → Numbers → (Select Number)

It allows a business to enable or disable link preview generation for messages sent through that WhatsApp number.

When enabled:
WhatsApp tries to pull basic information from the link—like the title, description, and preview image, WhatsApp attempts to show a rich preview (image + title + snippet) when a URL is included in a message.

When disabled:

WhatsApp will send the message without any preview, showing only the raw URL text.

This feature gives businesses full control over how URLs appear in their outbound campaigns and customer notifications.

2. Why is URL Preview Toggle important?

WhatsApp URL previews can increase user engagement, but they can also increase message size or affect user expectations. This toggle allows you to decide based on your use-case.

3. When Toggle is enabled what details will it include?

This card may include:

• Thumbnail image

• Page title

• Description/snippet

• The content is auto-generated by WhatsApp based on the website’s data.

• This is useful for marketing, promotional messages, product links, and announcements.

4. When should businesses enable URL Preview?

Enable when:

• Running promotional campaigns

• Sharing website, catalog, or product links

• Wanting to improve CTR (click-through rate)

• Using visually rich landing pages

• Sending brand announcements or offers

5. When should businesses disable URL Preview?

This is ideal for:

• System notifications

• Sensitive messages

• High-volume transactional alerts

• Scenarios where previews may mislead or distract users

• Faster message rendering in some cases
  

6. Does this toggle affect template approvals?

No, URL Preview Toggle does not affect template approval. URLs inside a template must still follow WhatsApp rules:

7. Does URL preview work for all links?

Not always. WhatsApp may fail to generate a preview if: Website blocks preview requests, Domain does not have proper metadata (OpenGraph tags). WhatsApp servers cannot fetch the content - it is entirely handled by WhatsApp.

8. Will URL Preview affect message delivery or pricing?

No — enabling or disabling preview will not impact pricing.

However:

Turning previews on may increase message size visually.

9. Can URL Preview be controlled at template level?

At the moment, the toggle applies globally at the WhatsApp number level, meaning:

If enabled → all messages from that number allow previews.

If disabled → all messages from that number suppress previews.

Individual message-level control is not yet available.
